DIRTY SUNBEAMS’ GIG OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER:
Lanterns On The Lake + Philip Selway (Radiohead), Halifax Minster – Friday 18th October 

A stunning centrepiece to this year’s Town Festival of Music and Words, which runs from the 10th to the 20th of the month. The beautiful, ambient setting of The Minster would seem a perfect fit for Lanterns on the Lake who combine dreamy, melancholic indie rock with layers of texture and intricate, celestial melodies.

What’s more, support comes from Radiohead’s Philip Selway, who played drums for Lanterns last year. He’ll be playing songs from his solo work. Town Festival programme in full> 

2. SONIC BOOM, The Trades Club – Thursday 24th October 

Pete Kember, co-founder of seminal 80s drone-rockers Spacemen 3, and man of numerous incarnations ever since, returns to The Trades. In his latest guise, as evidenced by the 2020 album All Things Being Equal, and subsequent Panda Bear collaboration Reset, you can expect trademark tremelo textures and hallucinatory harmonic collisions, this time pulsating through the melodic spirit of the Everly Brothers and Sam Cooke. More>

3. SWIMMING BELL + BOBBY LEE, The Golden Lion – Thursday 24th October 

A Dark Matter Promotions co-headline show featuring the lush, 70s west coast shimmers of Swimming Bell from the US and cosmic desert-folk maestro Bobby Lee. In the words of Rawckus Magazine: “Swimming Bell displays not only her remarkable songwriting ability, but the range and crystalline timbres of her superb voice.” Meanwhile, Bobby Lee released one of last year’s finest instrumental albums in Endless Skyways. Bobby comes from the Richard Thompson / JJ Cale / William Tyler swamp rock lineage. More>

4. ANTIDOTE: CALLUNA SUN + KINAARA + ABY VULLIAMY, Backfield Social Club – Sunday 6th Oct 

Leftfield folk music from Yorkshire forms part of the experimental and eclectic Antidote series, on tour to Elland for Calderdale’s Year of Culture. Calluna Sun create sweet-sounding, sibling harmonies, interweaving their mellifluous tones and combining their musicality with a love of nature. More>

5. MARTIN MCALOON (Prefab Sprout), The Trades Club – Sunday 27th October

Martin will be revisiting the repertoire written by his brother Paddy, that stretches back through the classic Prefab Sprout albums Swoon, Steve McQueen, Protest Songs, Langley Park to Memphis, Jordan: The Comeback, I Trawl The Megahertz and Crimson / Red. Expect the hits, pared-back acoustics and storytelling. More>

6. THE ROMAN EMPIRE + WARM PARTS, The Golden Lion (Todmorden) – Sunday 6th October

Acoustic-led band from Leeds with irreverent lyrical content and lashings of quirksome charm. Plus, exciting new Tod-based ambient outfit Warm Parts in support offering a majestic tapestry of shoegaze electro-dreamscapes. More> 

7. MYTHOM (JIM GHEDI & DBH) + MENKO, Nan Moor’s (Todmorden) – Thursday 17th October

Idiosyncratic nu-folk. Mytholm is the collaborative project of Jim Ghedi and DBH. The meeting of two rivers, if you will. Ghedi brings his deep-rooted folk to the fore; Todmorden-based DBH a unique blend of instrumental mastery. Together, they weave experimental, rich textures. More>

8. THE FROOT, The Blind Pig (Sowerby Bridge) – Friday 18th October

Five-piece psychedelic and progressive pop-rock band from the heart of Hull, with subconscious ties to the sound of the 60s and 70s. More>

9. BLOSSOMS, Victoria Theatre (Halifax) – Saturday 26th October

Touring new album Gary, produced by the band’s regular collaborator James Skelly of The Coral, alongside Jungle’s Josh-Lloyd Watson. More>

10. PLANTFOOD + SAD SELLS, The Grayston Unity (Halifax) – Friday 25th October

Thrilling six-piece jazz combo, Plantfood mash spiritual jazz and contemporary club grooves, taking inspiration from artists as diverse as John Coltrane, The Prodigy and Nubiyan Twist. More>
