DIRTY SUNBEAMS’ GIG OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER:
Marseille, The Grayston Unity – Saturday 14th September 

A self-declared mash-up of baggy-era 90s Madchester, shoegaze soundscapes and jangly psychedelic pop, Marseille have been getting a lot of music bods super-excited of late. The Derby-based five-piece also have more than whiff of Oasis stomp and swagger about them. That’s timing for you.

They are hitting the road for the launch of their new EP Godiva, featuring the single If It Hurts Don’t Cry – a six-and-a-half minute, hazy-rock epic with peak jams to rival The Gallaghers’ very own Masterplan. More>

2. NATURE KIDS + EVA KISS, The Grayston Unity – Sat 21st Sept 

Eminent Leeds-based janglers, fresh from a successful festival season, bring their evident love of jaggedy late-Pavement pop tones and dream-tousled indie to the basement room at The Grayston. More> 

3. CALLIS + THE CAYMANS, The Trades Club – Fri 13th Sept

New wave trio from Todmorden whose second single Dream Sequence was produced by Gordon Raphael, famed for his work with The Strokes. Their latest offering, Summer Bones, takes the band to a whole new level of brooding, atmospheric propulsion. Plus, much-loved Halifax quartet The Caymans in support. More>

4. ANALOGUE TRASH PRESENTS… LINES OF SILENCE + WARM PARTS, The Golden Lion (Todmorden) – Sun 8th Sept

A huge night in store, courtesy of the purveyors of psych-groove excellence, local label AnalogueTrash. Lines of Silence, with their latest album The Long Way Home just out of the bag, parade experimental kosmische atop motorik beats, improv feels and drone rock. Before all that, dig deep into the electro shoegaze and ambient krautrock explorations of new local band Warm Parts. More>

5. THE MONOCHROME SET, The Trades Club – Fri 6th Sept

Touring in support of new album Marc Riley Sessions from 2011 to 2022, The Monochrome Set formed in 1978 and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene, releasing a string of influential albums on labels synonymous with the indie scene – Rough Trade, Cherry Red and Dindisc. More>

6. MARY LATTIMORE, Unitarian Church – Thurs 5th Sept

A night of enchanting music and illuminations with harpist Mary Lattimore, plus support from Walt McClements. Mary’s inventive harp processing and looping have brought the instrument to a new audience and her prolific run of celestial solo albums and evocative film scores have redefined harp playing in the modern consciousness. 7. WOODEN TAPE + ROSE GREENWOOD + POLA, The Golden Lion – Sun 22nd Sept

Another veritable treat from Dark Matter Promotions. Headliner Wooden Tape serves up picked acoustic guitars, percussive adornments, warm synth pads and organ. The debut album Music From Another Place came out last year on the highly-respected God Unknown Records. More> 

8. DEARTHWORMS + THE SEVEN INCHES, The Puzzle –  Sat 21st Sept

Sheffield-based DIY post-punk / wonk-rock band headline. Described by The Guardian as “Eddie Argos’s absurdist yelp and Parquet Courts’ inscrutable wit”. It’s a reasonable assessment. More>

9. FALLING DOVES, The Blind Pig – Fri 20th Sept

An electrifying fusion of stadium rock and Sunset Strip glam, The Falling Doves are a force of electric energy, personally mentored by Phil Solemn (the Rembrandts) and the late Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots). More>

10. WILLIAM TYLER, The Golden Lion – Sun 15th Sept

A truly mouth-watering booking, brought to you by Basin Rock & The Golden Lion. Nashville guitarist and composer, William Tyler, who spent years woodshedding and touring with respected folk-rockers Lambchop and Silver Jews, now spends the majority of his time concocting uniquely magical space-guitar instrumentals. Last year, he also squeezed in a mind-blowing collaboration with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), which birthed the thrilling Darkness, Darkness, a 10-minute tour-de-force of trembling fiery guitar, sweet soul vocals and roadtrip beats.
